AANZCA brings together researchers, students, and teachers from an expanding array of communications disciplines to progress research, inform social policy and develop an ongoing understanding of new media and how it impacts our daily lives. AANZCA takes pride in its legacy of academic excellence, award-winning research and knowledge implementation.
AANZCA’s Role and History
Established as the Australian Communication Association in 1980, the trans-Tasman character of the association was formally recognised in 1994. AANZCA encourages and promotes scholarship in the broad field of communication teaching and research and supports vital forums for communicating research. These include an annual conference and Three journals (Media in Australia, Communication Research and Practice, and Platform).
Australian & Aotearoa New Zealand Communication Association (AANZCA) in brief
Celebrating 44 years, AANZCA strives to be at the forefront of communications scholarship, pioneering new ways to consider and engage with the realm of communications.
AANZCA’s history has been documented by Steven Maras in the AANZCA Dossier, of which majority content is recorded on the website.
Dossier
Compiled by Steven Maras, University of Western Australia. The purpose of this dossier is to provide a ready reference point for details about the history of the Australian and Aotearoa New Zealand Communication Association (AANZCA) for members and other readers. As the organisation continues to evolve and as memories fade, it has become apparent that there is a need for a record of some kind.
A secondary purpose is to provide a focal point for the discussion of the field of Australian communication studies more broadly. While the field is not identical to the activities of the Association, the two are closely interlinked, particularly through the AANZCA annual conference and the activities of journals supported by the Association. This is a work in progress that builds on the efforts and advice of others. It will hopefully improve as more people read and comment and will be updated in different versions. There are some specific gaps in the dossier and any assistance by individuals in providing extra information is greatly appreciated. In the event of any errors, inaccuracies or omissions advance apologies are offered.
